As in the rest of the world, Cordoba carnival originated as a pagan festival held on the days before Ash Wednesday.
Nowadays thousands of people in fancy dress or masks have a lot of fun in the streets of the city.
The Cordoba Carnival Association is responsible for organising and coordinating the different activities of what is the first milestone of the year.
Troupes, "chirigotas" (traditional folk groups), choirs and quartets from around the province and most of Andalusia gather in the city's Gran Teatro. The lyrics are full spicy humour, grace and originality and a guarantee that the public will enjoy themselves.
The traditional part of the city, where the carnival has been most outstanding since ancient times, includes the districts of San Agustín and San Lorenzo. The squares of the Corredera, San Agustín, the Poet Juan Bernier and the Cristo de Gracia and the surrounding streets, are places where the carnival is most celebrated. Performances and shows can be seen on the stages installed in these areas.
The last day of the carnival a spectacular parade with floats is organised in which everyone who wishes or dares is invited to take part.
