Córdoba celebrates the reopening of the Rich Hall at Medina Azahara
Some exciting news for lovers of history and Islamic architecture: The Rich Hall at Medina Azahara, the jewel of this archaeological site in the province of Córdoba, reopens to the public on 1 October.
After thirteen years of restoration and conservation works, this exceptional historical space will once again welcome visitors in an exciting programme called "Open for works".
The restoration of the Rich Hall, which has been compared to "putting together a vast jigsaw puzzle", will provide visitors with a look behind the scenes at the painstaking work that is being undertaken to restore this magnificent space to its original state. The hall, which is the only one of its type that has been preserved anywhere in the world, dates from the 10th century and is a true historical treasure.
During the Umayyad Caliphate the Rich Hall was used for political receptions and hosted dignitaries from different regions of both the Islamic and Christian worlds. With its carved stone decoration, lovingly restored by generations of experts, it is a national and international jewel of Islamic architecture.
The Rich Hall will be open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 October to 10 December 2023, a total of 21 days with six 45-minute tours between 10 am and 2.30 pm every day.
