Convent sushi: the original initiative by nuns that is triumphing in Granada
Granada offers a rich variety of tourist attractions, from its magnificent historical and cultural heritage to its delicious cuisine. But there's a place that has managed to take visitors by surprise with a unique and original culinary proposal: the Barefoot Carmelite convent in the Realejo neighbourhood.
This enclosed convent founded in 1586 has decided to reinvent its traditional cuisine and offer visitors the chance to taste authentic Asian dishes, especially the famous sushi, made by the Filipino nuns who belong to the religious community.
The initiative emerged two months ago in response to the fall in sales of the homemade confectionery that the convent produces in festive periods. The prioress, Sister María Dolores, accepted the proposal of the Filipino nuns to expand the convent's culinary offering with exotic dishes that blend the traditional cuisines of Spain and Asia.
"Sushi has been our star dish. We use fresh ingredients such as rice, mango, carrot, cucumber, seaweed and surimi to make our sushi, which has been very well received by our customers," explains Sister María Dolores, who has also learned how to prepare this dish following the instructions of the expert chefs.
In addition to sushi, the convent offers other oriental delicacies such as noodles, Filipino stews, gyozas and other specialities which the nuns prepare with dedication and a passion for cooking. Dishes can be ordered by phone and picked up at the convent, located in the historic Realejo neighbourhood, near the Alhambra.
The response from customers has been very positive and demand has quickly multiplied to become a resounding success that is helping the convent to survive. The proposal has also attracted the attention of the media, which have highlighted the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of Granada's Carmelite nuns.
