Climbing in Espiel
The town of Espiel, in the Valle del Guadiato region about 50 km north of the city of Córdoba, is one of the best places in Andalusia to practise climbing, and is considered to be a benchmark in Spain for this kind of tourism. If you are already a fan this sport or would like to get started, you will have to include it in your list of essential places to visit.
Winter is the best time to go rock climbing in Espiel, because in summer the heat in Córdoba is stifling and you will not be able to fully enjoy the extraordinary views from the Sierra del Castillo. Autumn and spring are also good options, which is when you will be able to appreciate how the landscape changes with each season.
What most attracts climbers to Espiel climbers is the easy access and the 200 routes distributed in different sectors. These include a good number of medium to low category routes, so you do not need to be a high-level expert to be able to enjoy the views from high up in the mountains.
The type of rock is good quality limestone, that is mostly grey with patches of red that accompany you as climb more or less steep rock faces. The climb could be classified as technical, although on some of the shorter stretches it could be said to be explosive. The average climb is 26 metres, although the longest is as high as 80 metres. There is possible nothing as comparable as the feeling of relief when you reach the summit, especially with the extraordinary panoramic views you get from high up over the Valle del Guadiato.
For a successful day's climbing you could well meet at the Espiel Guest House, an excellent starting point for getting to know the area, enjoying a little climbing or hiking, whatever takes your fancy, but always surrounded by the peace and tranquillity you get from direct contact with nature. The guest house is well known by many climbers who speak highly of the food, and find it an excellent way to recover after a hard day's adventure. The Guest House also has a climbing wall for those who still do not dare to tackle the natural rock walls or who are simply looking for somewhere to warm up. No more excuses, just enjoy the mountains!
