Climbing in El Chorro

El Chorro

El Chorro, a village in the municipal district of Álora, in the province of Málaga, is a real epicentre for Spanish and international climbers. Climbers from all over the world come to the area attracted not only by the technical difficulties presented by the "walls", but also by the wonderful, stable climate of Málaga, which enables them to practise their favourite sport practically at any time of the year.

This mountainous area has an extraordinary location next to the Guadalhorce River, after passing through the stunning Gaitanes Gorge. Rock faces that can be up to 300 metres high make this up a unique, unrepeatable venue for climbers looking for challenges. With these conditioning factors, it is not surprising that it has become a flagship for climbing schools in Andalusia and is considered to be one of the best in Spain.

There are thousands of climbing routes in El Chorro, so the first challenge climbers have to face is which one to choose first. To help you decide, just make a careful study of one of the different sketches that have been made of the different areas and climbing routes. Climbers generally find technical, slightly overhanging walls, although some of them can rise up at angles of up to 90º. Spectacular views are guaranteed.

It is essential for those looking to start out on this sport to contact professionals and have the best equipment. It goes without saying that what they really want is to see the world from another perspective, specifically from the heights looking out over the extraordinary limestone gorge of El Chorro. You will surely want to come back again and again. You are assured of the best climbing.

And if you still have any strength left, the adventure does not end here. You should always remember that running through this amazing landscape you will find the renowned trail called the "Caminito del Rey". It gets its name from King Alfonso XIII, who crossed it in 1921 to inaugurate the Conde del Guadalhorce dam. Like mountain climbing, this trail is not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo. Or if you are willing to put up with the fear of heights in exchange for enjoying the spectacular views that the place offers. They will remain in your memory forever!
