It is a magnificent example of military architecture from the Islamic period in the Iberian Peninsular and Moors and Christians continuously fought to control it. It is also an excellent example of how the topography played a decisive role in deciding where to build these enclosures. La Peña is a perfectly clear example of this and the structures (towers, walls and doorways) are all adapted to the rocks, inclines and promontories.

The fortress consists of two different levels. The upper level fulfilled a military function with one part for the nobility and another part for the army. the lower level was for the civilian population. There are a number of towers for protection and defence against possible attacks.

The restoration completed in 2013 brought to light the different elements that made up the fortress: cisterns, the mosque, towers, walls, pipes, cobblestones, parapets, stairways, rooms, etc.
