The castle of Castril is an excellent example of what the frontier castles were in the Islamic period in Spain, where the topography of the place was decisive when choosing their locations, being the Peña a clear and perfect example of this, adapting the structures (towers, walls and gates) to the rocks, slopes and promontories. In the case of Castril it seems that it is nature itself that made the castle and not man, almost blending into a whole.
The castle of Castril is situated on the Peña, being the best viewpoint of the region. Furthermore, the Peña de Castril has been declared a Natural Monument of Andalusia for its ecocultural values.
Since 2020 it is part of the Geopark of Granada.
