Natural area of great beauty, with abundant water and leafy poplar groves, the Source of the San Juan River is located very near the town of Castillo de Locubín, in the Sierra Sur de Jaén. It is an idyllic spot, a beautiful natural spring surrounded by vegetation and that emerges from the mountain.
A number of natural pools with crystal-clear water have appeared, from which underground water emerges to create beautiful, intermittent columns of bubbles that break at the surface. There are also small waterfalls and channels.
The pools created around the source of the river mark the beginning of a channel that local residents call the "caz" or "canal" which runs for several kilometres and enables the irrigation of the vegetable gardens along the riverbank. Finally, when it reaches the town, the channel returns the waters to the river next to the Roman bridge of Triana. The water tank closest to the river used to be used for the release of trout and for fishing, both by people with reduced mobility and by children, in such a way that they learned the values and techniques necessary to take care of themselves.
Like other areas in the region, where water and esoteric factors play a leading role, the Source of the San Juan River is part of the Sierra Sur de Jaén Route of the Miracles.
