Castilleja de la Cuesta
Pretty village of the Aljarafe district located near Seville which in the last few years has become a residential area.
It has some interesting monuments, such as the residence of the Salinas family, the former Palace of Hernán Cortés, the church of Santiago el Mayor, the church of the Concepción and the Hermitage de Nuestra Señora de Guía.
History
During the period of the Tartessians it was called Ucia. The Romans called it Castra and the Arabs Castalla.
The Christian conquest was undertaken by Ferdinand III in 1248, following which it was called Alijar or Alixar.
In 1267 it was placed under the jurisdiction of the Order of Santiago, in 1354 udner that of the Guzmán family, later under that of the Conde de Olivares and finally, in 1538, it was granted to the Order of Alcántara.
Hernán Cortés died in this town.
