Canteras Romanas Cerro Bellido
Cerro Bellido Roman Quarries are on a hill one kilometre to the south of Casariche, with Yeguas River flowing next to them, in a high place from where you can see the entire municipality and the beautiful olive groves that surround it. It also affords a 360º panoramic view of the Andalusian mountains, from Sierra Nevada to the group of massifs that go down to Malaga. Thanks to the views it affords it is the municipality's main landmark.
At the top of Cerro Bellido hill there are two amazing Roman stone quarries, used since the Iberian period. Footbridges have been installed in the quarries to make them accessible to visitors, as well as a fence all around the perimeter, and an excellent viewpoint. You can also find fossils of marine fauna embedded in the stone, especially shells that lived in what used to be the Tethys Sea, which rose some 200 million years ago.
Regarding the extraction of stone, the Romans used a unique method of which there are examples in the area.
