Jardín Botánico de Cactus y otras Suculentas Mora i Bravard
The Mora i Bravard de Casarabonela Botanical Garden for Cacti and other Succulents is located in the province of Malaga in the extraordinary village of Casarabonela, a village all in white at the foot of the Sierra de las Nieves mountains, where visitors will find one of the best collections of cacti and succulents in Europe since the garden houses a collection of some 2,200 examples of this species from all over the world. It claims to be a national and international benchmark for the study and distribution of this type of plant.
It is part of the heritage belonging to the Town Hall of Casarabonela, although its management is currently in private hands. The Mora i Bravard Botanical Garden for Cacti and other Succulents has its origins in an important collection of succulents put together by the husband and wife team of Edwige Bravard and Joan Gabriel Mora and which they took great care of for many years.
Edwige Bravard and Joan Gabriel Mora discovered their passion for these plants on the island of Majorca, until in 1995, in search of a more suitable climate, they moved to Andalusia and established their collection in its current location.
Although the garden is just 30 minutes from the coast, at an altitude of 380 metres above sea-level, the south east facing slopes of the Sierra Prieta mountains provide the ideal microclimate for their collection of cacti and other succulents that are on display. Although engendering the features common to a Mediterranean climate, the location of the garden has certain subtropical characteristics and this climate, with its varying types and degrees of aridity is typical of the different natural habitats of which the majority of succulents are endemic.
