Municipality made up of two different villages united for administrative purposes: Cárchel and Carchelejo. The Town Hall and administrative centre are in the second which is larger and more important than the first. It is situated to the south of the province in the midst of the southern mountains, next to the Granada - Jaén motorway in a rough mountainous landscape with olive groves and orchards along the Campillo river.

History

This municipality was created in 1974 by the union of the villages of Carchel and Carchelejo. Both villages depended on Cambil and were governed by annually elected mayors.
The Christian reconquest was led by King Fernando III but later returned to Arab hands until it was finally conquered by the Catholic Kings Fernando and Isabel.
