It is an old defensive tower from the Almohad period (12th century), the only one that remains of the whole circuit of walls that surrounded Cantillana.
It is built with rammed earth over stone ashlars belonging to an earlier construction from the Roman period. It formed the southern gate of the Muslim citadel and its inclination is due to the collapse of the foundations.
It had a 16th century sundial (polar) that gave its name to the tower and some mural paintings with the local coat of arms and the legend alluding to the Roman origin of the town. The municipal clock and a belfry with two bells and a weather vane were placed on it in the 19th century.
The legend on the front was: "Baslipo Clara Vetis que a vándalisolin: Cantillana vero Cesare municipata. Arripanisdemun Cantillana profeturun".
