Canalejas de Puerto Real

Biography

Juan Pérez Sánchez was born in Puerto Real (Cadiz) in 1905 and died in Jaén in 1966. He started singing professionally in the 1920s, where had to make room for himself among artists like Vallejo, Pastora, Marchena, Caracol, and Pepe Pinto. However, his "bulerías" (traditional Flamenco song with clapping and dancing), like “Rocío” went down well and Canalejas won the affection of everyone, filling theatres and bullrings.

He went to Barcelona, where he recorded his first records and then moved on to Valencia, where he stayed for several years before going to Madrid, specifically the Olimpia Cinema, where he worked with Angelillo and el Pena hijo. At 1935 he appeared in the Price Circus with Pastora and Pepe Pinto. When war broke out he settled in Jaén, where he remained until his death, by which time he was an undisputed artist who had bequeathed his successors with a new way of singing bulerías.
