Bastions of Santa Elena and San Roque
The bastions of Santa Elena and San Roque are part of the defensive system of Puerta de Tierra. The area was constructed in the 18th century, and each bastion was connected by a section of wall. Although the central part is more richly adorned and decorated, the walls and bastions were built in oyster stone, which is less pleasing to the eye but very resistant and easy to obtain. The bastions of Santa Elena and San Roque defended the land access from possible attacks from the flank or the bay.
Overall, they have been well-preserved, although at the end of the 1940s holes were made to create two wide arches that allowed road communication with the third expansion zone of the city, part of the glacis was removed, leaving only two ditches, and part of the San Roque bastion was demolished.
