The Grieta de Benamejí Crack is one of the most important geological phenomena in Andalusia, not only because of its size, but also because the phenomenon almost wiped out part of the town of Benamejí. This extremely interesting geological phenomenon has become a true emblem of the district.

The southern slope of Benamejí has a steep descent from the town centre, built on an elevation, down to the Genil River. There have been landslides on the slope for several centuries now.

The different causes of the landslides include the presence of the Genil River with its erosive activity to the south, geological and hydrogeological characteristics of the terrain that make these formations very splintery and underground water, given that the two natural and important movements (1963 and 1989) took place after intense and continuous rainfall.

Nowadays you can enjoy a pleasant stroll along its viewpoint with magnificent views of the Arias Gómez Castle, of the Renaissance bridgeof Hernan Ruiz II, of the pine trees and undergrowth along the banks of the Genil River, thewater mill and hamlet of El Tejar, to mention just a few outstanding natural places visable from the viewpoint.
