Before the end of April, Benamaurel holds its traditional "Moors and Christians" festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza. During a long weekend that lasts until Tuesday, the local residents dress up in spectacular costumes and parade through the streets to the beat of the music.
In accordance with tradition, 'roles' are played in a kind of theatre piece that is divided into two parts. It usually takes place over different days and the norm is for the interval to be reached with the Moors winning a partial victory. It concludes with the definitive triumph of the Christians and the final conversion of the Moors to the cause of the Virgin. The activities also include a procession of the Virgin, meetings between friends and family members, fairs and fireworks displays.
It has been declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia, and Benamaurel is the official headquarters in the south of the peninsular as the coordinator in the south of Spain for the candidacy to have the Moors and Christians Festivities declared as Intangible Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO.
