Begíjar
This small village is situated in the centre of the province, very close to Baeza and next to the Guadalquivir river.
Its landscape is dominated by olive groves and orchards.
History
It was founded in 642 in a place called Piedrahincada.
During the Al-Andalus period, the town moved to its present site for security reasons. An old fortress dating from Visigoth times was strengthened and extended to this end.
The Christian conquest was led by King Fernando III in 1244. The village was donated to the Jaen bishopric. Its palace was built with the materials obtained from the demolition of two of the castle towers. It has been a retreat for the bishops of the Diocese for a long time.
It obtained its independence from Baeza in the late 18th century.
