Cerro Cepero Hill, about 3 kilometres from Baza, is where the Iberian-Roman town of Basti was situated.

It was one of the most important Iberian fortress towns in the country. So much so that its name was given to a vast region, La Bastetania, which included the entire East Andalusia area of today, and even part of Albacete and Murcia, according to contemporary Greco-Latin authors.

It was possibly founded around the 8th-7th century BC, and it achieved its greatest splendour in 5th century BC - 1st century AD. It was also occupied by Visigoths and Byzantines, and was abandoned at the beginning of the Middle Ages, when the inhabitants moved to where Baza is today.

In 1971 the famous Lady of Baza was found in one of its necropolises. It is the best example of an Iberian tomb statue discovered in the Peninsula.

It is also known as the Archaeological Site of Cerro Largo, Cerro del Santuario and Cerro Cepero Basti.
