Minas del Centenillo
Few places seem more suitable for observing the sky than the abandoned mines of “El Centenillo”, in Baños de la Encina, Jaén. At Just 500 metres west of the village is a broad esplanade surrounded by old, abandoned buildings. The horizon in the north, west and south is completely free from light pollution, and truly dark at the zenith. At present, the area is being restored.
In spring, you can enjoy the elusive zodiacal light, and in summer it is an ideal place to observe the constellations that gradually disappear to the west. You are especially recommended to see the meteor showers in groups, which happen all year round thanks to the width and size of the esplanade, where large groups can gather.
It is an excellent place to go with the family to enjoy the heavens in the winter nights and spring. It is not safe to leave the esplanade and explore the ruins under any circumstances.
