Battle of Bailén Museum
As its name suggests, the Battle of Bailén Museum can be found in Bailén, province of Jaén, and is one of Bailén's must-see spots. The first thing that catches the eye is its striking building of relatively recent construction, which recreates a gigantic piece of artillery: the cannon, in clear allusion to the main weapon that made Bailén Battle a milestone in Spain's history. There are two paired vaults in the adjoining gardens that simulate the ammunition of this unique building.
Inside (accessed from C/Pérez Galdós 19), its Permanent Exhibition will help visitors discover a piece of history that would clearly change the course of Europe.
The Battle of Bailén Museum has 6 rooms that are connected to each other and which narrate the start and causes of the War of Independence (1808-1814) in a very entertaining and educational way, reaching the period of the catastrophic consequences of the war. Visitors will learn everything there is to know about each army, the weapons they used, their political organisation, the most important characters, and of course, the crucial and decisive role that Bailén and its people played in such a memorable battle. The events are narrated from a neutral standpoint, which, far from making an apology for the battle, seek to analyse the battle from an objective point of view, focusing on the virtues of solidarity, coexistence, tolerance, democracy and freedom.
In addition, the Battle of Bailén Museum has a series of rooms for temporary exhibitions that complete what is undoubtedly one of the most striking places to visit for tourists, and at the same time the city's cultural and social hub.
