Bailén is located in the region of Sierra Morena, the natural route for communication channels that connect the centre and north of the Iberian Peninsula with the south, as well as eastern and western Andalusia.

The universal fame of Bailén comes from the Battle of Bailén (19th July 1808) in which Napoleon's troops were defeated on open ground for the first time, at the hands of General Castaños.
