Bodega Santa Gertrudis
Bodega Santa Gertrudis is a part of the Sociedad Cooperativa Andaluza which was founded in 1964 by an important group of farmers in the Bailén area. Their vineyards grow in clay soil and enjoy an interior, continental Mediterranean climate. The main variety grown is the so-called “Molinera de Bailén” indigenous sub-species which can only be found in this district and its immediate surroundings. The vines are extremely resistant and the grapes are of a large size with a very thin skin.
In the beginning, the product from these vineyards was used as dessert grapes which were renowned for their high quality and only a small part was used for making wine for domestic consumption.
Currently the Bodega occupies 5,000 square metres and although you will still see some of the old clay vats and concrete tanks, they are mostly of stainless steel, with a total capacity of nearly four million litres.
The use of modern wine making equipment, new practices for wine production and traditional treatment during the production and ageing processes have led to the creation of wines of extraordinary quality, with the personality derived from the “Molinera de Bailén” indigenous grape variety, and a recognised prestige both in Spain and abroad, under the control of the Tierra de Bailén Wine Protected Geographical Indication.
