Puente De Piedra
The Puente de Piedra is a stone bridge over the Guadajoz River in the municipal district of Baena and it was built in 1776.
On the south bank of the river and both sides of the road leading to the bridge there is a recent avenue of poplar trees planted in the mid-20th century that provides shade for the limestone ground on the riverside.
In recent times they have begun to celebrate the Romería de la Virgen Blanca, a procession that is held on the last Sunday of June and in which the people of Baena dress as pilgrims to spend the day around the Virgin and their family.
As a result of projects arising from the European Social Fund for the preservation of our rivers a number of actions have been taken for the purpose of covering the banks with stones and other natural elements to promote the growth of different species of trees to stop the river banks disappearing due to erosion by the river water itself and uncontrolled activity by human beings.
Near the south bank and under the poplar grove a waterwheel has been built as a reference to all those that there used to be all along the river for irrigation and the cultivation of fruit and vegetables in the fertile valley of the Guadajoz River. Recent times have also seen the construction of a leisure area in the poplar grove itself and on Sundays and at the weekends you will always see families enjoying the natural country environment of this town.
