Templo de San Francisco
The Church of San Francisco belonged to an old Franciscan convent founded in 1417 by the House of Béjar, although the official date of the foundation appears as 1527. It was home to the Sacred Relic of the Holy Shroud, brought by Don Francisco de Guzmán, Marquis of Ayamonte, in 1578.
En 1755, the earthquake of Lisbon and the subsequent expropriation of Mendizábal, brought about the demise of the convent. Only the central nave remains standing of what was a beautiful church with three naves.
The church has a wonderful wooden roof of polychrome Mudéjar tracery, typical of the Seville school of the 14th century. The altarpiece over the Main Altar, by an unknown artist, dates from the end of the 16th century. At the sides of the presbytery there are paintings that represent the coats of arms of the Marquis of Ayamonte and the house of Béjar. The church has a doorway, in the form of a porch, in Renaissance style (16th. century).
