Peña de Arcos de la Frontera
The Peña de Acos de la Frontera Natural Monument is a large geological formation created by the erosive action of the Guadaleteriver, that erodes distinctly as it runs along a limestone area which gives rise to the modelling of several meanders and two large gorges. Its declaration complements the site formed by the mentioned Peña and the meanders of the Guadaleteriver itself.
The Peña de Arcos is a geological formation of unique beauty made up of "tuff", and is more than a kilometre and a half long and 100 metres high. It is a significant element in the landscape of the Cadiz countryside, where the hilly reliefs with gentle slopes predominate. The historic buildings in the highest part of the massif, the centre of the monumental site of Arcos, contribute to defining one of the most remarkable landscapes in Andalusia.
The vegetation is varied and adapted to the different existing land, depending on whether it is on high or middle areas, or beside the base of the slopes. Closed linked to the town of Arcos de la Frontera, on the Peña, there are different historical large buildings, significant in the conservation of the population of birds associated to the same.
Parallel to the river is a riverbank forest dominated by white and black poplars accompanied by mace, oleanders and ash trees. As we leave the water network, there is a beautiful, colourful landscape dominated by vegetable gardens and fruit orchards, especially citrus fruits.
