Ermita del Santo Cristo
In Archidona, the Chapel of El Santo Cristo was built in the 18th century, at the foot of the Sierra de Gracia, at the back of a large rectangular patio. The chapel and the courtyard were remodelled and refurbished in 1977.
According to tradition, a little over a hundred years ago, the image of Christ Crucified was moved to a hillside on the Cerro de la Virgen “to a small building where it received devotion“
The chapel consists first of all of a broad hallway which is an anteroom for the chapel, at the back of which there is a small shrine. It has a square floor plan, a double gabled roof, and at the intersection there is a wrought iron cross. Its walls are whitewashed, except the doorway which is in brick, it has a lintel with voussoirs, pilasters and divided façade at the centre of which there is a flat, semi-circular niche, with painted tiles, representing Christ Crucified, and surrounded by classical motifs, and a small shrine enclosed by a triangular gable.
The interior is covered by a groin vault, and in the back wall there is a niche with a wooden Christ Crucified in front of which there is an altar. In the side walls there is an image of the Virgen de Gracia and another of El Infierno and La Gloria.
