Information Centre on the Iberian Pig. Ham Museum
In the province of Huelva, in Aracena, in the heart of the Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche Nature Reserve, the Museum of Ham in Aracena is also a Visitor Centre for the Iberian Pig. It was designed to provide information and to organise educational tours with regard to this ancient, mountain culture that has been passed on from fathers to sons.
There are seven rooms in which visitors will gradually discover all the facts regarding the star of the show: the Iberian pig. Visitors will learn about the breeding process, the pig's life in the open mountain pastures, its diet, traditional and industrial methods of slaughter, the curing and production process, as well as the aging process in the cellars.
It is all very entertaining and educational with a series of audiovisual media: panels and projections to accompany the guide's explanations, as well as answering and clarifying any queries that visitors may have.
What is more, the Museum of Iberian Ham has a Mycology Information Point, where visitors can learn about the world of wild mushrooms and fungi, with an area dedicated to the mountain path called Sierra Morena. The latter is an area that has been adapted to provide information on this stunning mountain area with regard to location and heritage, ecosystems, tourist attractions and the link between the towns in the Sierra Morena and Iberian pork
