Iglesia Prioral de Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor
The Priory Church of Nuestra Señora del Mayor Dolor is the oldest and most emblematic temple in Aracena. It was built between the 13th and 15th centuries in the urban area, next to the castle. The building is in Gothic-Mudejar style and the outer tower stands out, in Mudejar style, decorated with panels of sebka brick and clearly influenced by the Giralda in Sevilla.
The church has three naves of equal height, covered with ribbed vaults, a choir and a vestibule. Inside, it is worth noting the chapel built in Neoclassical style in the 18th century in the apse, which houses the image of the Virgin of Mayor Dolor, patron saint of Aracena. In the chancel, we find the tin-glazed earthenware tomb of the prior Pero Vázquez, by Miguel Florentín (16th century).
On the outside, the Royal Gate with its atrium and the Mercedes Gates decorated with typical elements of Flemish Gothic are outstanding. Similarly, we should underline the altarpieces, imagery and paintings inside, dated from between the 16th and 20th centuries.
