Biography

Antonio Tovar Ríos (Antonio de la Calzada and Niño de la Calzá) was born in the neighbourhood of Calzá in Seville in 1913 and died in Seville in 1981. Back in 1927, when he was just 14, he won a "jondo" deep singing contest, with a jury that included Manuel Torre and el Gloria. He used to play in many "flamenco opera" shows back then, with artists such as Manuel Escacena, José Cepero, Bernardo el de los Lobitos or el Niño de las Marianas

Then he played with Niña de los Peines and Pepe Pinto for quite a long time. He was playing with them when the war broke out. They were in Jaén, and Antonio decided to stay there with other singers such as Canalejas or Enrique Orozco Soon afterwards he started to work with Juanito Valderrama.

He became quite famous for his rendition of the bulerías "Mi jaca", and the cuplé "Limón, limonero" But he was always best at fandangos He created many different versions and one that he made after the war was adapted by Camarón, so many flamenco lovers got to know him

After the war he joined Manuel Vallejo's company. Then he worked with El Cojo de Huelva and Juan Varea, but after the 1950s he worked mainly at festivals.
