Biography
Antonio Gómez de los Reyes was born in Sevilla in 1961, in Corral de Saramaya, in the heart of a family of flamenco artists. He began to dance in Sevilla´s Swimming Club Ballet and later went to some screenings for the Spanish National Ballet, celebrated in the Lope de Vega Theatre, where he was taken on as a dancer. Soon he turned into a solo performer in this company and began to participate as a guest star in other artist´s shows.
In 1981 he collaborated with Paris´ Maguy Marin company, which served for him to work with other dancing personalities such as Rudolf Nureyev, Maia Plisetskaia, Carla Fracci, Vladimir Vasilev, Fernando Bujones, Peter Schaufuss, Sylvie Guillem, Patrick Dupond and Julio Bocca.
In 1988 he was awarded the (Italian) Mavisela Award for best dancer and in 1990 was awarded Mexico City´s Award for Best International Dancer, sharing this with Julio Bocca. In 1992 he participated in the Giants of Dance gala in the Campos Elíseos Theatre in Paris and soon created his own dance company, debuting in Bilbao with the scenography A ti, Carmen Amaya and Siempre flamenco. In 1995 he was awarded the "Premio Nacional de Danza" an in 1999 the Andalucian Medal.
With his dance company he has set up pieces such as "A ti, Carmen Amaya", "Siempre flamenco", "Bengues", A cuerda y tacón, Gitano, Variaciones sobre el Guernica de Picasso, La casa de Bernarda Alba, Raíces, "Torero", "Fuerza Latina", "La Cenicienta", "Bailaor", "Ojos Verdes", "Carmen Carmela", "Mano a Mano", "Una moneda de dos caras"...
