Palacio Consistorial
What is today the Town Hall or Municipal Palace was previously until the time of the "Desamortización", or confiscation of church property, a convent belonging to the Franciscan Terceros order. Although the façade was rebuilt in the modern neo-Baroque style, there are still important pieces remaining from the old monastery building in the interior, including the cloisters (1679) and the sumptuous staircase, the most magnificent example of the Antequera Baroque style. The richness of the materials (different coloured polished marble) used for the banisters, the footboard and the stairs and the beauty of the design are truly palatial.
In 1845 the whole convent building was acquired for use as the Town Hall, and extensive conversion work was begun which affected mainly the façade and several rooms on the interior. These include the assembly hall, in the 19th-century style, and the Salón de los Reyes, or Hall of Kings.
The courtyard of the Town Hall building and the Salón de Plenos (Plenary Chamber) may be visited by prior appointment.
