The Plaza del Coso Viejo was also formerly known as Plaza de las Verduras (lit. Vegetable Square), since the Antequera open air market was held here.
It has been recently renovated and now in the centre of the Plaza del Coso Viejo you'll find an equestrian statue of the Infante Don Fernando and behind him a fountain representing the four elements: water, fire, air and earth.
The square is overlooked, from the citadel, by the lookout point of El Almenillas, the walls and the Arco de los Gigantes. In the Plaza del Coso Viejo there are two important buildings: The Palacio de Nájera, a beautiful Antequera mansion housing the Museum of the City of Antequera and the Convento de Santa Catalina de Siena.
