Museo de la Ciudad de Antequera

In the monumental city of Antequera, the City of Antequera Museum was created as a “Municipal Archaeological Museum” by the City Hall on the 4th of August, 1908 at the request of the archaeologist Rodrigo Amador de los Ríos. The first premises were located in one of the ground floor corridors of the Municipal Palace, specifically the one that borders with the Iglesia de los Remedios, where over the next fifty years an important collection of pieces of great historic value, mainly from Roman times, was put together.

An extension and improvements to the City of Antequera Museum were recently inaugurated, making it one of the most important in Andalusia at the municipal level.

The recently inaugurated project, financed by the Ayuntamiento de Antequera and the Central Andalusia Network of Medium-Size Towns Project, which in turn is sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Commerce and Sport of the Regional Government of Andalusia, required an investment of nearly five million Euros, for both the building work and the museum facilities.

The Museum of the City of Antequera has a shop, which also acts as left-luggage, information point and sells tickets. There is also a room for meeting and audiovisual projections, administrative offices, healthcare services, a hall for temporary exhibitions, store rooms, restoration workshops and twenty permanent exhibition rooms arranged in a time line from prehistory to the present day.
