Museo Conventual de las Descalzas

The Discalced Carmelites of Santa Teresa founded their convent in Antequera in 1632, although the existing church dates to between 1707 and 1734.

The most notable aspects of the exterior are the sliding door dating to its foundation and the church´s superb Baroque facade. The façade is a typical example of Carmelite architecture, although there is a certain pagan element in the iconography that is somewhat at odds with the spirit of the Order. The church was built with superbly cut bricks comprising numerous layers of fired clay to create a dizzying array of Greco-Roman mermaids, Tritons, Pegasuses and figureheads.

The floor plan of the church is laid out in a Latin cross with a single nave and relatively shallow transept wings. The cloister is home to an important collection of art works. Also known as San José church.
