Iglesia de Santa María de Jesús
Construction of the church began in 1527 and was completed in 1615. It was a monastery belonging to the Third Franciscan Order and has undergone several alterations over the centuries.
The most noteworthy part of the building today is the main chapel, dedicated to the Virgin of El Socorro, whose 18th century side chapel is extremely beautiful and is decorated with extraordinarily ornate plasterwork. The church also comprises some very important sculptures (including one of Jesus of Nazareth) and paintings, such as those of La Veronica and the Adoration of the Shepherds.
The Royal and Illustrious Archbrotherhood of Santa Cruz en Jerusalen and Nuestra Señora de Socorro is now the owner and keeper of the entire building, and has in its possession a large part of the ancient and extremely rich collection of processional items (many of which are brought out on the evening of Good Friday) on display in the exhibition room dedicated to the brotherhood at the Museo de la Ciudad.
Free entrance.
