Iglesia de San Pedro
The original Church of San Pedro was built in 1522, but it soon became too small, and building work was recommenced in 1574.
This is one of a group of Renaissance columned churches in Antequera, although this church, unlike the other two (Santa María and San Juan), has a vault of Gothic crosswork rather than Mudejar latticework as in the case of the earlier ones. Architectural features worth noting include the chapel of Ánimas, where the vault and the front of the arch are decorated with attractive plasterwork motifs.
Among the most interesting items is the sculpture of the Cristo de las Penas, a crucified Christ-figure crafted in great anatomical detail dating from the 17th century, which is noteworthy for the unusual fact that the arms are practically vertical (as proposed by the Jansenists); and the baptismal font of red limestone from El Torcal which dates from the 16th century.
