The monastery belonged to the Frailes Mínimos de San Francisco de Paula, who were forced to abandon it following the sale of Church lands. It is currently occupied by the Congregation of Religiosas Terciarias, founded by the Antequera-born Madre Carmen del Niño Jesús.
The existing church was built between 1712 and 1718, and its floor plan and elevation are worthy of note. The façade was built with ashlar stone, the overhanging central and side balconies being a prominent feature and lending the building a civic appearance.
The interior is extremely interesting, comprising as it does a highly elaborate central floor plan, and its complex spatial structure can prove rather disconcerting to the visitor. The side chapel retains the original plasterwork from the early 18th century.
The monastery is also known as the chapel and museum of La Beata Madre Carmen del Niño de Jesús.
