Andalusia has been awarded a historical record of 147 blue flags for its beaches, ports and boats in 2023

Andalusia has been awarded a total of 147 blue flags for its beaches, ports and sustainable vessels in 2023, this being the greatest number ever awarded. The Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC in Spanish) has reported that of the total of 147 flags, 126 correspond to beaches, 19 to marinas and two to sustainable boats.

The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Arturo Bernal, pointed out that "one of our great strengths as a destination is the sunshine and beach segment and this is why these awards are so important as they serve as motivation when choosing our coastline.".

He also explained that Andalusia is committed to working to have its beaches in the best possible condition from a health and environmental point of view, and that visitors are increasingly demanding with regard to sustainability, which is why reason Andalusia is working so hard to respond to what people are demanding.

By province, Almería obtained 33 awards (32 beaches and one port), Cádiz 37 (31 beaches and six ports), Córdoba (one beach), Granada 13 (12 beaches and one port), Huelva 16 (11 beaches and five ports) and Málaga with 47 was awarded the most (39 beaches, six ports and two sustainable boats).

The blue flags are awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education to sustainable beaches, ports and boats, and they are granted following annual ADEAC inspections and audits to those municipalities that request them and meet a series of criteria grouped into four sections: environmental information and education, water quality, environmental management and security and services.
