Almócita
Small village situated between Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Gádor. Its municipal area is included in Sierra Nevada Natural Park, one of our region's natural paradises, due to its scenic, botanical and anthropological wealth and also for its fauna.
The village preserves the typical Moorish architecture of the area and the Parish Church is a focal point.
History
Town founded by the descendants of Tubal. Its Arabic origin still lives on in the design of its streets and in its architecture. It still preserves the Jewish Quarter in the Barrio Bajo. It includes in its centre the best-preserved Moorish architecture in the province.
In the Al-Andalus era there was a communal well that supplied the village. The current Town Hall is located on this site.
In the year 1570, a historical fact worthy of mention occurred. Don Juan of Austria went to Almocita to negotiate the surrender of the Moors in the Alpujarra who had revolted. The agreement was made under a holm oak tree in the Cortijo del Hadid, which since then has been known as the "Cortijo de las Paces" (The Farmhouse of Peace).
