Parque Arqueológico de las Murallas Meriníes
In Algeciras, the Archaeological Marinid Walls Park consists of a 100 metre ancient wall, with four towers from the late medieval period and two of unknown origin, a well-conserved moat nine metres deep, with scarp, counterscarp, the first part of the barbican, and a stone bridge in an excellent state of repair allowing the moat to be crossed at the Gibraltar Gate.
These remains were unearthed in the course of archaeological excavations when extending Avenida Blas Infante. The stretch of medieval wall, which goes back to the thirteenth century, was restored and adapted so it could be an Archaeological Park within the urban landscape.
The site totals 6,000 square metres and also has a visitors' centre where a number of unusual architectural items found on the site are on display.
