In Algeciras, the Mercado de Abastos (or "Fresh Food Market") or Mercado Ingeniero Torroja is a rationalist building which was designed by Eduardo Torroja Miret, executed by the architect Manuel Sánchez Arcas and built in 1935. It was declared to be a National Heritage building by the Department of Culture of the Regional Government of Andalusia, as an example of modernist architecture.
An avant-garde and functional work, full of open spaces, with few decorative details on doorways and pillars, it is one of the landmarks of XXth Spanish architecture. The dome, with its large octagonal space, was the largest dome in the world for 30 years (until 1965).
Today, it is still an essential reference point for Architecture students; while it also acts as a focal point for commerce, services and general activity in this part of the city.
