The Quarter of San Isidro stands right in the heart of Algeciras, and it is one of the most authentic quarters of the city. Cobbled streets and steep hills make this area of the city a special place, one which draws and captivates all visitors.
The heart of the quarter is the Chapel of San Isidro Labrador, which contains the image of theChrist of Medinaceli, one of the most popular in the city. The figure is accompanied by his Mother, María Santísima de la Esperanza. Every first Friday of March, they are visited by thousands of people.
For the inhabitants of Algeciras, Saint Isidro represents the true essence of the city. Its white houses, cobbled streets, gardens and wrought iron grilles conveys an image that makes it seem anchored in the past. Its small square, next to the church, is one of the most traditional corner of the city. It is not only a meeting place for the inhabitants of the area, but has also become the scene for many cultural events and activities.
