The La Mayora Experimental Station, located in Algarrobo, Malaga, is the headquarters of the current La Mayora Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture (IHSM-CSIC-UMA). Its aim is to spread knowledge about tropical species. It has been dedicated to scientific research for over 60 years and has been a key centre for agriculture both in Spain and internationally. In fact, much of the 21st century has been devoted to the study of the different varieties of avocado.
So much so that approximately 25 hectares of the cultivated land they have today (the farm has a total of 50 hectares) is used to grow avocados. Although its main activity is focused on carrying out research projects , in recent years, it has opened its doors to groups of visitors, schools and students interested in learning about and tasting the wide variety of tropical fruits grown in Malaga, especially in the Axarquía region.
Visitors can enjoy a sensory tour through the IHSM La Mayora research centre, a place that has transformed tables throughout Europe and introduced strawberry production in Huelva, as well as the cultivation of avocado, mango and custard apple in Spain. Through the centre's research and projects, we can understand the role of science in agriculture and its social impact.
