The first archaeological remains to be unearthed in the Plaza Vieja area of Aguilar de la Frontera point towards there being municipal buildings dating from the fourteenth century. We know, from reliable written sources, that the jail, granary and courts stood on the site where the Pósito de Aguilar building stands, so it appears that the building evolved in keeping with the developments in this public area of the town.

The building's appearance as it is today goes back to 1726, when the new Chapter Houses and another silo were built, using material taken from two castle towers.

Between 1995 and 1999, the building was refurbished so that it was in a condition to be used by the citizens of Aguilar de la Frontera, in fact it was used as a Local Library and Municipal Consumer Information Office.

Temporarily, only the exterior can be visited.
