Monasterio de San José y San Roque
Located in Aguilar de la Frontera and popularly known as "Las Descalzas“ the foundation of the Monasterio de San José y San Roque was sponsored by Rodrigo de Varo y Antequera (1667-1671).
Located on one of the city's main thoroughfares, the exterior appears as finely dressed masonry walls with their corresponding façades (1683 and 1702). The main feature of the complex convent layout is the church, a fine example of Cordoba Baroque.
The church has a Latin cross floor plan and closes with a barrel vault and rib arches with lunettes and a dome over the transept. The main attraction is the rich ornamentation of the wall hangings with five altarpieces, painted murals, oil paintings on canvas in different formats with carved frames, architectural details and plasterwork which are all of extraordinary beauty.
Special mention should go to the main altarpiece (1694-1697), the sculptures of Jesús Nazareno and the Virgen de los Dolores, the extraordinary paintings by Fray Juan del Santísimo Sacramento (San Roque, San José with Baby Jesus and Santa Teresa de Jesús and the Virgen Protectora del Carmelo) and the Coronation of the Virgin, signed by E. Muñoz.
