Standing on the hill of the Silera and on the site of an old hermitage, the Iglesia de los Desamparados began to be built in 1734 as a chapel-shrine dedicated to the Virgen de los Desamparados, in Aguilar de la Frontera.
Midway through 1790, the church was rebuilt, thanks to the generosity of the Gorgonio brothers and Teresa of León, and it was consecrated in 1799. In the mid and late nineteenth century it became private property, before it was acquired by the Town Council in 2002 due to its cultural importance.
In the present day, the buildings is used for municipal buildings, the Municipal Music and Dance School, and for a multi-purpose stage.
