Iglesia de la Vera Cruz
Located in Aguilar de la Frontera, the present Iglesia de la Vera Cruz was built in the mid-17th century. The interesting side doorway corresponds precisely to this period.
The church has a single nave with a low vault and rib arches and a presbytery with a dome standing on pendentives which is presided over by the Baroque main altarpiece, with a central recess leading to a domed side chapel sheltering the Virgen de los Remedios. There are also two coloured wood altarpieces (1770) housing the extraordinary sculptures of Christ bound to the column (18th century) and Jesús Preso -Ecce Homo- (first half of the 17th century).
During the 18th century two chapels were built beside the pulpit, with the chapel of the Virgen de la Rosa deserving special mention, being one of the most interesting Baroque Marian sites in the province. It is hexagonal, decorated with painted plasterwork and the paintings alluding to the virtues of the Virgin Mary, alternating with very original architectural effects. The side chapel is home to the image which gives it its name (Granada school, circa 1730-1732).
You can also admire the Lignum Crucis cross-reliquary, the altarpiece of the Inmaculada and the image and altarpiece of Cristo de la Vera Cruz.
