Iglesia de la Candelaria
Located in Aguilar de la Frontera and built in 1540, the Iglesia de la Candelaria has a unique Mannerist façade from 1585. Between 1730 and 1734 the chapel was partially re-built and restored in 1976.
Built in the Mudéjar style, it has a single nave with four parietal plaster altarpieces and is connected to the main chapel by means of a semicircular triumphal arch for supported on two adjoining columns. Highlights include the very interesting main altarpiece of the presbytery, and the side-chapel, works attributed to Juan Belmonte Bartolomé (1776-1781).
Although the most interesting feature is the roof, since the body of the church body is covered with a decorated coffer ceiling with five wooden beams with lace work. Both of these were completed by Miguel Granados and Alonso Ramiro (1575), although they were renovated in the late 18th century.
Open only during hours of worship, Sundays at 9.30am.
Free admission.
