A mosque in the middle of the Sierra de Aracena
One of the most spectacular surprises in the Sierra de Aracena, the Almonaster La Real mosque - of Roman, Visigoth and Arab heritage with spectacular views of the mountains.
From path to path, you stroll through the Sierra de Aracena and the last thing you expect to find on a hilltop is a mosque. Yes, that's right. This is the type of surprise referred to in the first of the reports that spoke about the Sierra de Aracena in general and it is the surprise we get when we reach Almonaster la Real.
This place, popularly known as "the castle”, was a military location in Roman times, and later became a Visigoth monastery and, finally, after the Muslim invasions, a mosque.
As you can see, a mixture of the most varied cultures have left the best of each of them in the building.
Both the views of Almonaster la Real and the Sierra de Aracena, like the sound of the water that still flows in the sahn, the courtyard of ablutions, in one of the fountains inside the mosque will transport you back to another time.
It is well worth a visit, along with a stroll around the outskirts of the town and - why not - a tapa in one of its bars.
